Solanum betaceum (tree tomato, Andean tomato, serrano tomato, cassava tomato, sachatomate or chilto, also known by the name invented in English, tamarillo) is a shrub from 3 to 4 m in height, with gray bark and perennial foliage.
 
The fruit is an ovoid berry of 4 to 8 cm x 3 to 5 cm, with a long peduncle in which the calyx of the flower persists. The skin is smooth, red or orange at maturity, with lighter-colored streaks. The pulp is juicy, somewhat acidic, orange. The fruits are edible, can be eaten raw directly or in salads or are preferably cooked to prepare juices, sweets and desserts. They provide iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and vitamins A, C and E. to red.
 
It is sensitive to frost, winds and droughts. It requires sandy loam soils, with good drainage, rich in organic matter and respond well to compost.
It is multiplied by seeds, which germinate very easily. It presents very fast growth, giving fruit to the year of sowing and continuously for 48 months.
